چکیده

a a i r s c p Background. Sternal wound infections are a major omplication after cardiac surgery in terms of morbidity nd cost increase. To decrease the incidence of infection, e evaluated triclosan-coated sutures for the closure of he sternal incision, as it is known that most of the urgical site infections are related to the incision site. Methods. From May to December 2005, a total of 479 atients underwent a cardiac surgical procedure. From hose, 103 patients were closed with triclosan-coated uture material (cost per patient $30 [in United States ollars]), whereas the remaining 376 patients had their ncision closed with noncoated sutures (cost per patient 21). Results. During the study period, 24 patients had uperficial (n 10) or deep (n 14) sternal wound

Synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles and its immobilization on alginate coated sutures for the prevention of surgical wound infections and the in vitro release studies

The Silver nanoparticles are well-known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory wound healing abilities. We synthesized Silver nanoparticles using chemical reduction method and the formation of the silver nanoparticles was characterized by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, FT-IR and SEM techniques. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the synthesized nanoparticles was determined for both gr...

Viable adhered Staphylococcus aureus highly reduced on novel antimicrobial sutures using chlorhexidine and octenidine to avoid surgical site infection (SSI)

BACKGROUND Surgical sutures can promote migration of bacteria and thus start infections. Antiseptic coating of sutures may inhibit proliferation of adhered bacteria and avoid such complications. OBJECTIVES This study investigated the inhibition of viable adhering bacteria on novel antimicrobially coated surgical sutures using chlorhexidine or octenidine, a critical factor for proliferation at...

An economic model: value of antimicrobial-coated sutures to society, hospitals, and third-party payers in preventing abdominal surgical site infections.

BACKGROUND While the persistence of high surgical site infection (SSI) rates has prompted the advent of more expensive sutures that are coated with antimicrobial agents to prevent SSIs, the economic value of such sutures has yet to be determined. METHODS Using TreeAge Pro, we developed a decision analytic model to determine the cost-effectiveness of using antimicrobial sutures in abdominal in...
